Description:The second phase of an important Heritage Center documentary to preserve and understand local history from the perspective of a select group of the oldest residents in Winter Park’s historic African American community. The group of elders consists of current residents, ages 80 to over a 100, who have had a lifelong relationship with the historic Hannibal Square community. Since the project’s inception in 2012, more than half of the participating elders in the first phase have passed away, but their legacy and contributions will last forever through the collection at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, reaching local residents and visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Through the art of documentary photography by Heritage Center founder Peter Schreyer, and oral histories collected by the center’s chief historian Fairolyn Livingston, the memories and stories of elders from one of the nation’s oldest African-American townships will become an exhibition at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. During the exhibition, the Hannibal Square Heritage Center will host a Juneteenth Celebration at the Winter Park Community Center, date TBA. Exhibition will be on display from April 12 – August 31, 2019.
